geeks are best

comics--grinning Kurt
Wow, was WonderCon awesome. I was a little worried earlier today, because my head's not been entirely right (I, uh, accidentally went off of Effexor when losing track of time and meals while sick), but the sea of people just didn't bother me, for the most part.

We stopped by to see Danny right away, and did a vague sweep of bits of Artist's Alley, before I beelined for the Oni Press booth (they were giving away Tek Jansen posters!), to try to catch Chynna Clugston, and she was indeed there. I broke in this awesome little notebook [info]enuffistoomuch had given me at some point (I've been intending for years to have a famous-artists-sketchbook thing), and Chynna kindly drew me a saucy little Bleu Finnegan (who else could I ask for, with my now-and-again-hair?). I later went back for a comic and some buttons, and ultimately ended up buying the original art (with some bonus random sketching on it) for the frontispiece from Absolute Beginners, which I am just utterly thrilled about. Wonderful lady, it was terrifically cool to meet her.

I also found Matt Wagner (he did a nifty 10-second Kevin Matchstick), Ted Naifeh (who did this astonishing Polly for me, sketching first in orange pencil and then actually inking it!), Phil Foglio (he drew Agatha Heterodyne, and I picked up a few GG goodies), Mike Mignola (OMG! I got a huffing Hellboy, though kinda wish I'd requested a baby-kid Hellboy), and Terry Moore (who was incredibly sweet, and drew an amazingly detailed Francine for me), plus a cute bit by Danny.

After talking with a girl in a great Princess Yue (an Avatar character) costume, we checked out the Nickelodeon panel, as it promised to show three Avatar shorts (supposedly all superdeformed), but they lied, and only gave us one we'd seen online before. At least we got a look at the great Avatar cosplay group (with a Sokka and a Toph!), so it wasn't a total waste of time, though we did have to suffer through Spongebob frickin' Squarepants and a few other unfunny bits around the Avatar piece.

I am over the moon about this sketchbook thing, keep paging through it reverently, and just cannot believe how awesomely generous all these incredible artists were. Wow. I was also a naughty monkey and got this gorgeous little watercolor of a marlin-mermaid by Stephanie Law, whose art I have loved for many, many years; hopefully my lust for her original art has been slaked for awhile, because I can't allow myself any more of it. o.O

A day filled with so much geekery, incredible artists, and utter glee; my feet hurt from walking, and my cheeks hurt from grinning, which balance out nicely. Now we're watching bad ghost movies on SciFi (is there any other channel on Saturday nights? Not for us!) and expect I'll pass out before long, being extremely tired--but I wouldn't trade this tired for anything else.
